The Gokyo Lake trek stands out among the various trekking routes in the Everest region, as it is a less frequented destination with fewer trekkers. The trail to Gokyo Lakes follows the opposite route against the regular Everest base camp route. The Nepal Nirvana Trails offers this promising 10-day trek for those who want to experience a trekking tour on a fresh, less-trodden adventure.

Embarking on the Gokyo Lake trek is like stepping into a poetic journey, where each day brings a new opportunity to fall in love with the surroundings, except for the return journey. The Gokyo Lakes, situated at an impressive altitude of 4730 meters, are among the most enchanting lakes, and the trekking tour provides the opportunity to create lasting memories against the backdrop of the breathtaking Himalayan vistas. The trek provides an unforgettable experience, allowing you to witness charismatic views of the mountains that were once only imaginable.

The trek to Gokyo Lakes starts from the Kathmandu-Lukla flight, a brief yet captivating flight offering mesmerizing views of the Himalayas through the northern side windows. Renowned as one of the world's most adventurous airports, Lukla Airport marks the starting point for our 10-day trek to Gokyo Lakes, concluding with a return to Kathmandu on the tenth day. Nepal Nirvana Trails has especially created the Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary for adventure-seeking individuals who want a more tranquil and exotic trekking experience.

Throughout the trek, we'll be treated to majestic views of various mountains, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Cho Oyu, Mt. Kanchenjunga, and more. We will pass through the lush rhododendron forest inside the premises of Sagarmatha National Park and get a sight of different Himalayan fauna and avifauna like Lophophorus, Red Panda, Himalayan Tahr, and many more.

The major attraction of this trek is undoubtedly Gokyo Lake, recognized as the highest freshwater reserve in the world. Gokyo Lakes comprise six different lakes above 4790 meters from the sea level. These lakes stay frozen for almost 9 months in a year and the ice melts partially in March, April, and May.

The Gokyo Lake trek exemplifies the blend of emotional moments and stunning beauty. At each resting point along our journey, breathtaking vistas of towering majestic mountains and snow-covered hills, dotted sparsely with settlements, will unfold. Every stoppage will stun you with the sheer joy of beholding these magnificent mountains.

Why Choose the Gokyo Lake Trek?

Being a substitute route for Everest Base Camp, the Gokyo Lakes trek is quite an underrated trail for its offerings. From the pristine and beautiful views at regular intervals to the highest lakes in the world, this trail has everything to amuse the trekkers with their whole hearts. Also, as mentioned above, this underrated trekking route will have a smaller crowd compared to the regular Everest base Camp route so peace-loving people will love to allure and appreciate the nature of the Gokyo region. The culture of Sherpa Community can be closely observed as there will be fewer visitors and it will be easy for the hosts to introduce their culture to everyone in detail. Nepal Nirvana Trails is happy to serve you with this one-of-a-kind trekking plan.

Gokyo Lake Trek: An Alternative to Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp is the most preferred trekking destination in the Khumbu region. However, not many can achieve the optimum destination of Everest Base Camp, EBC is physically and mentally draining and demanding, that is the sole region some people might want to escape Everest Base Camp but reach almost the same altitude and get the same viewshapes during the trek.

The scenic diversity of the Gokyo Lake trek is more diverse and pristine than Everest Base Camp. We will cover the alpine forest for an adventurous trekking experience. The trail will lead us toward the highest freshwater reserves in the world and the mesmerizing Gokyo Ri. Along with the diverse landscape offered the crowd will be fewer than that of Everest Base Camp’s route. So, you will get more time and less hassle to enjoy the diversity of nature en route.

    Useful Info

Altitude Sickness during the Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trek

During the time of high altitude treks like the Gokyo Lake trek, the chances and risks of getting caught by altitude sickness are high. Nepal Nirvana Trails requests all of its invaluable customers to be well aware of the consequences of high altitude trek. In the past, many trekkers have found the Gokyo Lake trek difficult to escape altitude sickness. According to our Gokyo Lake Trek itinerary, we have an acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar so that the trekkers can have a rest day as well and they will get adapted to the high altitude. Also, our experienced guides will always be assisting you in case any emergency occurs. Nepal Nirvana Trails guarantees to have you pleased and assured of the best possible service by all of our team during your Gokyo Ri and Gokyo Lake Trek.

Accommodations during the Gokyo Lake trek

The accommodation during the Gokyo Lake trek will be moderate. You will have a twin-sharing room. The room will have a basic lodging facility, and the bathroom will be shared with other trekkers, outside of the room. You will be provided with warm blankets to save yourself from cold. We suggest carrying sleeping bags while trekking in the high season and cold temperatures.

    Food and drinking water facilities

The food facility during the Gokyo Lake trek is of a wide range. In the Everest region trekking, you can have food choices from the local foods to the western foods during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food will contribute a huge amount of carbs and protein. Rice, potatoes, lentils, and green vegetables will be provided with non-veg options for those who take non-veg. We usually suggest skipping the non-veg options as sometimes those foods can lead to food poison. You will have the freedom to escape some ingredients from your food if you do not want to consume them.

There will be a drinking water facility at every stoppage. You can choose to drink the running tap water or boiled water. We suggest taking the water purification tablets while consuming the tap water. The tap water will be free of cost, but the boiled water might cost you a few rupees. The water will be safe to drink directly and will not contain any preservatives in it.

Expectations during the Gokyo Lake trek

You can expect the most beautiful and alluring views during your trek to the Gokyo Lake and Gokyo Ri. Gokyo Ri provides jaw-dropping views from its lap to you as it will be the highest point you will walk to during the Gokyo Lake package trek. You can see the best view of Mt. Everest from the Gokyo Ri, which you cannot see from the Kalapathar during the regular Everest Base Camp Trek. Nepal Nirvana Trails assures you the best services so you will not have any difficulties during your trekking experiences.

Permits and costs required for Gokyo Lake Trek

    • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit costs: NPR 2000, per person
    • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit costs: NPR 3000, per person

Nepal Nirvana Trails will arrange all the permits for your convenience and you shouldn't worry about them at all.

Best Season to trek to Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri

The experience of the trek becomes more aesthetic and beautiful when you trek into the greatest weather. The most amazing weather for the trek is a moderate temperature, clear sky, no precipitation or rain, and easy accessibility. To trek to the higher altitudes like Gokyo Lakes, the weather will be a key part of having a successful trek.

Nepal Nirvana Trails strongly suggests to plan your trip to the Gokyo region during these seasons in particular:

Autumn (Mid - Sep - Mid - Dec):

The Autumn Season is also known as the “season of happiness” in Nepal. Because the summer is over and winter is still far away, the weather becomes beautiful to watch far away from you. Also, this is a festive season in Nepal and also the holiday season. Everything aligns with tourism so this is also the best tourism season in Nepal. You can see the stunning view of the mountains over the sparkling bluish water of Gokyo Lake during this season. There is less chance of rain which makes the trekking more safe and secure. We suggest you plan your trek in this season as there are a lot of advantages during this season that you might not get in other seasons.

    Spring (Mar-May):

The spring season is another great season to be a part of the Gokyo Lakes Trek. The season is full of blooming flowers and singing birds when you walk under the woods. The rhododendron will be blooming so that the chilling rhododendron trees will be pleasing on your trek. The season is similar to the autumn season in temperature and weather conditions but the perk is this is not a holiday season in Nepal. But the Lohsar falls in the season, so you can get festival vibes in the Khumbu region. You can even experience the festival with the local community. Along with that, the days are longer and the temperature is in the rising phase. The higher the temperature, the higher the chance of getting to see melted ice turned into water in Gokyo Lakes. So, the aesthetically pleasing Gokyo Lakes can be seen in its true form in the season.

    • To prepare for steep ascents and descents, develop your leg muscles through training.
    • If high-altitude training is an option, do it to prepare for the trek's altitude.
    • During the trek, ascend gradually to give your body time to adjust to the increasing altitude.
    •  Drink a lot of water to stay hydrated during trekking or hiking.
    • It will be better if you consume protein-rich fruits and veggies and avoid alcohol and tobacco during your trail to high altitudes.

    Travel Tips

ATMs: There will not be any ATMs available to withdraw money from Namche Bazar. So, the essential thing for you will be to carry cash with you when you trek to Gokyo Lake. The cash will be absolutely important during the trek to get extra food, buy souvenirs, and provide tips to the trekking teams.

Travel Insurance: During any trek, there are probabilities of uncertain mishaps. In case of mishaps or accidents, there is a possibility of getting injured and ending up in a hospital with the support of helicopter evacuation. The helicopter evacuation and hospital bill will be very hefty to pay. So, to avoid those hefty hospital bills you mandatorily buy travel insurance. We hope the best for you and strongly recommend you buy travel insurance.

Tipping: Providing tips for guides and porters is not compulsory. However, the trekkers appreciate the contribution of trekking guides and porters for their successful trekking with gratitude.

Our Magical Trip of a Lifetime into the Beautiful Khumbu Region and to the Summit of Gokyo Ri with Nepal Nirvana.

I want to wish KP and everyone else at Nepal Nirvana an enormous thank you for setting us up on the adventure of our lives towards to summit of Gokyo Ri with stunning Everest, Makalu, Lhotse views and more. KP provided great service and looked after us from the moment we arrived in Kathmandu and until the moment we left. Thank you brother 🙏
I also want to thank our tour guide Raju, who was exceptional, super friendly and experienced and he taught us how to play Dumbal (a Nepalese card game)! Together we picked up 12 bags of rubbish off the trails in the mountains and a lot of this work was due to Raju’s commitment to keeping his country beautiful. Lots of great memories made between us.

      Dear Bell, Namaste!
Thank you for sharing an incredible review of your experience of the Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri Trekking with the Nirvana Trails team! We are always pleased to guide you with better services. We are glad your experience was wonderful with our guide, Raju.
