Why should you do the Annapurna Circuit luxury trek? Is it worth it?

The Annapurna Circuit luxury trek is a once-in-a-lifetime voyage. You will traverse lush Himalayan foothills, spend the night in picturesque villages, eat delicious organic meals, and enjoy stunning mountain panoramas.

The Annapurna Circuit luxury trek is a journey through a variety of landscapes. From lush rhododendrons and pine forests to shrubs and green pastures above the treeline, trekkers will be treated to a diverse and ever-changing scenery.

On the way, there are many steep and narrow tracks, several suspension bridges, and a few wooden bridges. While the trek is filled with adventure, it also offers a rich cultural immersion. You'll have the opportunity to interact with different communities and learn about their culture and way of life. It will be a fantastic experience.

The trail is dotted with temples, stupas, and prayer flags. Talking about the scenery changes with the increase in elevation. The views change from lush valleys to barren terrains to trans-Himalayas landscapes and back to greenery.

Mountains like Fishtail (6993m.|22943ft.), Annapurna (8091m.|26545ft.), Dhaulagiri (8167m.|26795ft.), Nilgiri (7061m.|23166ft.), Hiunchuli (6441m.|21132ft.), Gangapurna (7455m.|24459ft.), Tukuche (6920m.|22703ft.), Tilicho Peak (7134m.|23406ft.), and many others are seen during the trek.

The Annapurna Circuit luxury trek itinerary

The Annapurna Circuit luxury trek starts with your arrival in Kathmandu. You will spend two nights in the five-star Marriott or Hyatt Regency Hotel, enjoying modern luxury with traditional Nepali hospitality.

During your time in Kathmandu, you will do the shopping for the trek and explore a few tourist sites like Monkey Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Patan Durbar Square with our professional tour guide.

You will find all kinds of trekking-related clothes, gear, and essentials in Thamel, the tourist hub of Kathmandu. Grab all the essentials and pack your duffle bag. On the third day of the tour, you will leave Kathmandu in the early morning hours with your mountain guide. Enjoy a scenic ride to Besisahar.

The highway follows rolling, lush green hills and rivers. You can also see beautiful views of terraced fields, waterfalls, and mountains. The last 1-2 hours of the ride get a bit bumpy. Spend a night at Besisahar and drive to Chame or Brathang village the following day.

There is a lovely luxury lodge in Brathang, and you will also get to tour a small wine plant and taste some local wines made from organic apples. From Bratang onwards, you will start trekking. The trail follows lush hills and goes through verdant forests.

You will come across a large rock called Paungda Danda rock. It rises 1,500 meters (4,921 ft) from the Marshyangdi River. The mountain views are superb along the trail. Spend a night in Pisang, or if you have energy, hike to Nagwal village. From Pisang village, you will continue trekking, following the upper trail that goes through Geru.

This trail is extremely gorgeous, with stunning mountain vistas. Manang is the biggest village on the Annapurna Circuit and has many modern services. You will spend two nights here to acclimatize. Explore the village and hike to Hidden Ice Lake.

Following our itinerary, you will trek from Manang village to Yak Kharka. However, you have an option to extend the trek to Tilicho Lake. It will take 4 to 5 days to hike to the lake and rejoin the Annapurna Circuit trail. There is no luxury accommodation on this route. However, the landscapes you will see and the adventure it offers are just mind-blown. We highly recommend it.

Anyways, back to Yak Kharka. From here, the trail leaves the Marshyangdi Khola River and enters the Jarsang Khola River. You will mostly see shrubs and junipers on the way because the elevation goes above 4,000 meters. Yak Kharka onwards, the trail ascends to Thorong Phedi, which is the last settlement before Thorong La Pass.

Some trekkers also like to spend the night at the High Camp. There are few tea houses at the High Camp, but less busy than Thorong Phedi. The next day, you will wake up around 2:00 AM and get ready to leave your accommodation by 3:00 AM.

You will climb to the top of the Thorong La Pass and cross it before sunrise to avoid the strong wind that hits around mid-morning. The climb is tough, but the view from the top of the pass is outstanding. Enjoy the view and begin descending from the pass to Muktinath Temple.

The descent requires caution as well. You will navigate rock terrain and landslide debris. The walking part ends in Muktinath. From here, you will drive to Ghorepani village. It will be around a 90km jeep ride. During the drive, you will see diverse landscapes that range from arid to lush.

The next morning, you will hike to the Poon Hill viewpoint to witness a gorgeous sunrise and descend to Banthanti village. Take a four-hour ride from Banthanti to Pokhara. Spend a night in the luxury Fish Tail Resort or Temple Tree Resort & Spa.

The next day, you will explore the city with your guide and take a later afternoon flight back to Kathmandu. Your hotel will be all ready to welcome you back. We have kept one more full day in Kathmandu to allow you to explore the city, rest, and shop.

You can do the Everest Experience Flight or EBC Helicopter Tour on this day. Our Annapurna Circuit luxury trek package does not include expenses for these activities, so you need to pay the charge.

On the day 15th of your trip, you will leave Kathmandu and fly back to your home. Our team will drop you at the international airport.

Major attractions on the luxury Annapurna Circuit trek

During the luxury Annapurna Circuit trek, you will explore the following destinations:

Tourist sites in Kathmandu

Kathmandu has many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, temples, museums, and local markets to explore. You will get one full day before and after the trek in the city. Before the trek starts, you will spend half a day visiting some tourist sites with a tour guide.

After the trek, you will have one full day in the city for post-trek relaxation and shopping. Visit monuments like the Monkey Temple, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Patan Durbar Square.

These are a few of the most famous historical sites in Kathmandu, where you will learn about Nepali culture, traditions, art, and architecture. The tour guide will brief you about the places, and you will also discover the local markets around the sites.

Beautiful luxury lodge in Bratang village and wine plant excursion

Bratang is a small village between Chame and Pisang villages. It is an apple heaven. Just a couple of years ago, a luxury lodge was opened in Bratang, which provides a fantastic retreat amidst the mountain with premium amenities. Likewise, backpackers can explore apple farms and a wine plant here, taste delicious wines, and enjoy a serene time.

Manang village and hike to Ice Lake

Manang village is the biggest settlement on the Annapurna Circuit. This village has many modern services, an old theater that plays some set movies, museums, and a bustling small market. During the trek, you will spend two nights here.

Manang is also your acclimatization point. From here, trekkers usually hike to Praken Gompa and Ice Lake. Suited 4,600 meters (15,092 ft) above sea level, it is a stunning lake surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The hike takes around 5 hours.

Thorong La Pass

Thorong La Pass is the highest mountain pass in Nepal. It connects the Annapurna region with Lower Mustang. The pass is located 5,416 meters (17,769 ft) above sea level in the Damodar Himal range. Trekkers cross it while doing the Annapurna Circuit trek from east to west, which is safer and easier than west to east.

Crossing Thorong La Pass, in general, is strenuous. Thorong Phedi to Thorong La Pass to Muktinath Temple requires 8 to 9 hours of walking. Trekkers start climbing before the sun rises and descend to Muktinath. You have to be physically strong to cross the pass.

Muktinath Temple

Located 3,710 meters (12,172 ft) above sea level, the Muktinath Temple is one of the important pilgrimage sites in Nepal. This temple is dedicated to Hindu Lord Vishnu and is also important to Buddhists. Among the 108 Divya Desams, Muktinath is the only one located outside of India. Moreover, this temple is also associated with one of the 51 Shakti Pitha.

The Muktinath temple is known as a center of liberation. It is a place where devotees visit to rinse their sins and get liberation. Pilgrims run across the 108 water sprouts and take a dip into the pond. It believes in clearing your sins and soul.

Likewise, for Buddhists, the Muktinath temple is an abode of Avalokiteśvara. In Tibetan Buddhism, this place is known as Chumig Gyatsa (the Hundred Springs).

Drive through the Kali Gandaki Gorge

The Kali Gandaki Gorge is considered one of the deepest gorges in the world. You will drive through this gorge while traveling from Muktinath to Ghorepani village. The upper part of the gorge is home to the Thakali community. The gorge separates Mt. Dhaulagiri in the west and Mt. Annapurna in the east.

Ghorepani village and Poon Hill viewpoint

Ghorepani is one of the most beautiful and famous villages in the lower Annapurna region. And the same goes for Poon Hill's viewpoint. This place offers a stunning sunrise and jaw-dropping panorama of the 20+ western Himalayan mountains.

Ghorepani is situated at 2,874 meters (9,429 ft) above sea level. Rhododendron forests and snow-capped mountains surround the village. It is home to the Magar and Gurung communities. Similarly, Poon Hill is located at 3,210 meters from sea level.

Tour in Pokhara

Pokhara is the gateway to the Annapurna region. It is the second biggest city in Nepal and is very loved by foreigners. The city is home to numerous lakes. You can see views of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Fishtail from many parts of the city. During your time here, you will explore the lovely Phewa Lake, bustling Lakeside Market, Davis Falls, International Mountain Museum, Gupteshwor Cave, etc.

Trek difficulty and preparation

The Annapurna Circuit trek is challenging, but doing it in a luxury style makes the journey more manageable. Even beginner trekkers with good physical and mental fitness can do this trek. You will walk approximately 85 kilometers (53 miles) on this trek.

5 to 6 hours of walking is required daily. The Annapurna Circuit terrain is offbeat and steep. Daily ascents and descends demand good stamina, strength, and endurance. You will also push yourself mentally.

So, participants have to be in good shape. Previous trekking expertise will come very handy. Crossing Thorong La pass is the toughest section of the Annapurna Circuit. Follow the advice of your guide, and you will be able to cross the pass without any worries.

To prepare for the trek, we advise strength training and aerobic exercises. You can also do a few day hikes and some short treks. These will help you experience similar terrain and high altitudes.

As this is a luxury trek, you will enjoy the finest amenities along the trail. Trekking infrastructure-wise, the Annapurna Circuit luxury trek is not demanding.

Altitude sickness

On the Annapurna Circuit trek, you will travel from 760 meters to 5,416 meters. The altitude gain is significant on this trek.

With the increase in elevation, the air thins, and the oxygen level slowly depletes, which increases the risks of altitude sickness. Therefore, it is very important that trekkers acclimatize to the elevation as they ascend.

So, how to acclimatize? The first thing you can do is have an acclimatization day in your itinerary. Our luxury Annapurna Circuit trek itinerary has an acclimatization day in Manang village.

You will go on a hike to high altitude from this village and return to spend the night. Hiking high and slowing low will help you adjust to the environment.

Likewise, we highly recommend trekkers ascend gradually and take their time to enjoy nature and the climate. Similarly, keep yourself hydrated. Drink a minimum of two liters of water every day, and avoid smoking or consuming cigarettes while you are trekking.

Finally, listen to your body, get adequate rest, and have enough food. Trekking in the Himalayas is all about patience. Enjoy the journey and forget about the world out there. Live in the moment, and do not tire yourself unnecessarily.

These are some early signs of altitude sickness that you should be aware of- nausea, vomiting, headache, difficulty breathing, insomnia, dizziness, and loss of appetite.

Best time to do Annapurna Circuit luxury trek

Annapurna Circuit trek is best enjoyed in these months- March, April, May, late September, October, November, and early December. Among them, April and October have the finest weather and climatic conditions.

These months are the peak trekking seasons in Nepal. Many trekkers do the Annapurna Circuit trek in these months, so the trails are joyful. The mountain views are clear and jaw-dropping. The climate is mild, so trekking is quite delightful.

Similarly, the lower altitude is covered with greenery and rhododendrons. Waterfalls, rivers, and streams are in their best condition. You may also get to see some of the biggest Nepali festivals during the peak trekking seasons.

In other months, unpredictable weather and rainfall/snowfall make trekking the Annapurna Circuit very challenging and unsafe. If the trail condition is not good, the Thorong La Pass may also be closed in these months.

Weather

The weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable throughout the year. However, March to May (spring) and September to November (autumn) have a bit of stable weather, which makes trekking favorable.

Both seasons have mild climates, so it is neither too hot nor too cold. The temperature ranges between 25°C to -0°C. The mornings and nights can get a bit colder than the daytime.

In spring, you can feel the air gradually getting hotter, and the region begins to melt. Life returns to the trail, and the entire lower altitude sees bursts of rhododendrons and other flowers. The snow melts off the trail.

You will experience fresh air in autumn as the monsoon clears all the pollution. The climate gradually begins to get cold as the day passes. The leaves turn yellow and brown, showing that winter is around the corner. The scenery is just way too beautiful, given all the hues of brown, orange, and red.

Travel Insurance

To join the Annapurna Circuit luxury trek, trekkers must buy travel insurance covering emergency helicopter evacuation and medical bills. This is a compulsory document that participants must present before the trek starts.

Without the insurance, including the necessary coverage, you will not be allowed to join the trek. Get travel insurance in your country because it is not available to foreigners in Nepal. Now you must be thinking why travel insurance is needed?

The Annapurna Circuit trail is remote, with no roadways or hospitals. Given the offbeat nature of the terrain, the trekkers may get injured if they are not cautious. Likewise, you will be leaving your day-to-day life and adopting a completely new lifestyle for a week.

Even with our best efforts, you may fall ill. If you get hurt or ill beyond first-aid control, we must evacuate you to a hospital in Pokhara or Kathmandu. It is the only way we can provide you with prompt medical assistance.

Now, without travel insurance, it will cost you a good amount of money for the rescue. Likewise, rescue providers hesitate to provide the service if travel insurance does not cover the expenses.

We recommend that you get well-covered travel insurance for your own good, financial protection, and peace of mind.

Accommodation

The accommodations during the Annapurna Circuit luxury trek are five-star hotels in Kathmandu, luxury resorts in Pokhara, and luxury lodges during trekking. You will get the best accommodations throughout the trip.

We book shared or single rooms in the lodges. The luxury lodges offer better amenities than the standard lodges/tea houses. The rooms will be decent in size with cleaned bedding and blankets. Trekkers can bring a sleeping bag for more comfort.

Your room will have an attached washroom. Western-style toilets will be available everywhere. We highly recommend that you pack all the toiletries, including toilet paper, soap, and wet wipes, in case they are required. Similarly, hot showers will be available in most places.

Charging and WiFi services will be available, too. Make sure you are carrying an adapter for Nepal's electrical outlets. Pack some power banks and spare batteries for your camera if you plan to take lots of pictures and videos.

The network coverage along the Annapurna Circuit trail is not that good. WiFi is available in villages at lower elevations, but the connection may not be stable or reliable all the time. You can get an NTC SIM for the Annapurna region. It has Okaish network coverage.

But once you go above Manang village, you will be out of network until Muktinath. Our guide will be equipped with a satellite phone for emergency communication with the office team in Kathmandu.

Meals

The Meals during the Annapurna Circuit luxury trek will be excellent. The package provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You will have all the meals in the lodges. It is a custom to have dinner and breakfast in the lodge. You spend the night and lunch on the way.

The menu on the luxury lodges is fantastic. From traditional Nepali food to Western dishes, you will have various options. The foods will be made from organic ingredients that are mostly sourced from locals. Vegetarian food is widely available. Non-veg dishes are also found everywhere.

If you are vegan, gluten-free, or have any specific dietary requirements, let us know in advance. We will see how viable it is to provide you. For lunch and dinner, you will have dal bhat, fried rice, rice and curries, momo, thukpa, etc. These are some local dishes.

Apart from that, pizza, burgers, pasta, French fries, noodles, meat dishes, sandwiches, etc., are also available in many places. The breakfast menu includes pancakes, chapati, Tibetan bread, oats, muesli, cornflakes, soups, porridge, bread, egg, sausage, etc.

Different types of teas and coffees are available in beverages, along with hot lemon, honey ginger tea, hot chocolate, etc. You will get a complimentary seasonal once a day. Drinking water is also available everywhere.

We provide water purification tablets for added safety. Trekkers can also buy additional food and drinks on their own. These are personal expenses, so they are not covered in our package cost. Make sure you plan a daily allowance for the trek.

Safety

Trekking the Annapurna Circuit involves risks of injuries, accidents, altitude sickness, and minor illnesses like indigestion, fever, headache, etc. This is because you will be exposed to an entirely new environment, walk various hours on offbeat terrain, and eat food with unique spices.

Not every trekker gets ill or hurt while trekking, but these are the chances. So, you have to be careful while walking and mindful of what you put into your body. Our guide will provide first-aid for minor discomforts, so do not worry.

Please understand that the Annapurna Circuit trek is not easy by any means. A luxury expedition does make the trek more manageable, but the terrain, altitude gain, walking hours, etc, all remain the same.

So, make sure you are physically and mentally prepared for the trek, follow the advice of your guide, and do not wander alone off the main trail. Do not stress, and enjoy the journey. Our crew will be with you all the time to ensure your safety in the mountains.

Guide and porter

You will do this trek with a native guide and porter who is thoroughly familiar with the trail, locals, and region. Our guides are professionals with many years of experience. They are trained to lead groups in the Himalayas, handle any medical emergency, and many other remote survival.

You will trek with the most trustworthy, reliable, and friendly team. The porter will carry your duffel bag during the trek, allowing you to trek more freely and lowering the risk of falls or injuries.

Both guide and porter combined make Annapurna Circuit trekking possible with their expert guidance and care. With the guide, you will get the top accommodation and meals. He will recommend different local dishes to try and share stories and events.

Likewise, they will motivate you to keep moving forward and keep you entertained with their jokes, dances, and singing. Do not worry; you will have your fair share of alone time as well.

Luggage

We have a limit for luggage you can take during the Annapurna Circuit trek. We provide complimentary duffel bags to use during the trek to our guests. They can pack all their trekking clothes and gear in the duffel bag.

Porters carry duffel bags, so do not pack any essentials that you may require while trekking. Unloading and loading the bag onto the porter will be very troublesome. The weight limit for a duffel bag is 9 kg per trekker.

Similarly, trekkers can carry a daypack. Its weight limit is 5 kg per person. You should pack your documents, money, snacks, water bottle, lip balm, tissue paper, camera, and any essentials in it.

If you have any extra suitcases that are not required for the trek, you can leave them in your hotel's locker room or our office for free of cost.

Tips

Tipping your guide, porters, and drivers are common in Nepal. It is expected by them at the end of their services. It motivates them to go above and beyond for the guests.

You can tip as much as you wish. If you are grateful for your crew's service, tipping them is the best way to thank them.
