What it's like to sign up for the Annapurna Circuit Trek from Pokhara?

During the Annapurna Circuit Trek, you will be walking on the iconic foothills of the Annapurna range, famous for its diverse landscapes, adverse climatic conditions, and culturally enriching villages. The Annapurna Massif represents the central core of the great Himalayan arc and is among the world's most sought-after trekking routes.

The Annapurna trekking trails lead you through the dense alpine forest, welcoming communities, a rich tapestry of flora and fauna with challenging passes, and unique geological features making the Annapurna Circuit an absolute gem of a trail.

Thorong La Pass, at an elevation of 5,416 meters, marks the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit. Given the challenges posed on this pass, the circuit typically follows a counter-clockwise route. The Annapurna Circuit Trek first welcomed international trekkers in 1977; since then, it has garnered a reputation as one of the world's finest trekking routes.

Beginning at an altitude of 822 meters in Pokhara, this journey allows for comprehensive exploration of the Himalayas. The mountains are vast, snow-covered, and jagged in all directions, the sky is a sharp color with mesmerizing blue and the air is pure with subtle scents of juniper and rhododendron. This remarkable Annapurna Circuit Trek guides trekkers through rural picturesque villages that are home to Gurung and Magar communities, which unveils awe-inspiring panoramas of the Annapurna Massif. The scenery transitions seamlessly from the northern face of the Annapurna peaks to the elevated and arid expanse of the Manang and Mustang plateau.

Day to Day Details

Your journey starts with a long travel day. First, you take a local bus from Pokhara to Besisahar (about 5–6 hours). The road is winding and follows rivers and hills.

From Besisahar, you switch to a shared jeep. This part is more adventurous, bumpy off-road driving along cliffs and rivers. After several hours, you reach Dharapani, a small mountain village.

You’ll stay in a teahouse (simple lodge), have dinner, and rest before starting the trek.

  • Guest House
  • Lunch and Dinner
  • (1860m.|6200ft.)

This is your first proper walking day. You’ll walk for about 5–6 hours through forests, rivers, and small villages.

The trail goes gradually uphill, so it’s not too difficult, but you’ll start to feel the altitude slightly. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls and maybe even your first views of snow-capped peaks.

Chame is the district headquarters, so it’s a bit bigger, with shops, bakeries, and great mountain views.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (2610m.|8890ft.)

Today’s walk is about 5–6 hours. The scenery starts changing—you leave dense forests and enter a more open, dry landscape.

You’ll cross suspension bridges and walk along the Marsyangdi River. As you gain altitude, the air gets thinner, so you’ll walk slower.

Upper Pisang is a beautiful village with traditional houses and stunning views of the Annapurna peaks.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (3300m.|10824ft.)

This is one of the most scenic days. Instead of the lower route, you take the higher trail via Ngawal, which helps with acclimatization.

Expect about 6–7 hours of walking. The views are incredible—wide valleys, big mountains, and Tibetan-style villages.

Manang is a large village and an important stop. There are bakeries, cafés, and even small shops. You’ll stay here for two nights.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (3540m.|11612ft.)

You don’t trek forward today. Instead, you hike up and come back down to help your body adjust to the altitude.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Now you move into higher altitude. The walk is shorter (about 4–5 hours) to help your body adjust.

You’ll feel the altitude more here, so walking slowly and drinking water is important.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (4060m.|13320ft.)

A shorter day (3–4 hours), but you gain more height. The trail is rocky and quiet, with big mountain surroundings. You’ll rest early, eat well, and prepare for the toughest day.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (4525m.|14842ft.)

Crossing Thorong La Pass is the toughest and most important day. You start early (around 3–4 AM) and hike 4–5 hours uphill in thin air to reach the top, where prayer flags and stunning mountain views await. After that, you descend for another 4–5 hours to Muktinath. It’s a long and tiring day (8–10 hours), but also the most rewarding. Muktinath is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists.

  • Guest House
  • Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • (5416m.|17769ft.)

After breakfast, you take a jeep or bus from Muktinath area (usually via Jomsom) back to Pokhara.
