The best time to do the Bhutan tour from Kathmandu

The best time to do the Bhutan tour from Kathmandu is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These months have a pleasant climate, which makes exploring the monuments fantastic. As these two seasons are peak time to travel in Bhutan, you will see many other tourists. Pack a few warm pieces just in case.

Likewise, you can also travel to Bhutan in summer/monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February), but you may face the season's related challenges. Traveling during the monsoon is the most difficult because of rainfalls. Monuments may get closed due to rain. If you are well prepared for the weather, you can do a short Bhutan tour in the summer/monsoon and winter seasons.

Do I need travel insurance for the Bhutan tour?

We highly recommend having travel insurance when traveling to a new country. Travel insurance provides several benefits and safeguards in case unexpected situations arise during your journey. You can cover medical expenses, trip cancellation/interruption,  lost, stolen, or delayed baggage, etc in your travel insurance.

*Note: Check the travel insurance policy carefully before buying it. Before the trip starts, hand over the documents to your travel agent so that they can use them in case needed.

Bhutan tour difficulty and altitude sickness

Exploring the towns of Paro and Thimphu, visiting monasteries and dzongs, and engaging in cultural activities are typically manageable for most travelers. However, walking or hiking on uneven terrain and climbing steep steps at some sites may require a basic level of fitness.

Likewise, Paro is situated at an altitude of approximately 2,250 meters (7,382 feet) above sea level, while Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is located at around 2,320 meters (7,612 feet). These altitudes are relatively high, and visitors may experience the effects of altitude as they acclimate to the thinner air.

Symptoms of AMS can include headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Be aware of this condition and inform your guide on time to minimize its impact.

Tips for dealing with altitude sickness:

  • Gradual acclimatization: Allow your body time to adjust to the higher altitudes by spending your first day in Paro or Thimphu. You can engage in light activities and stay well-hydrated. Our short Bhutan tour itinerary provides you ample time to adjust to the altitude as you explore the tourist sites.
  • Medications: Some travelers take medications to prevent or alleviate altitude sickness symptoms. Consult with a healthcare professional before your trip.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water to combat the effects of dehydration caused by high altitudes.
  • Rest: If you experience symptoms of AMS, rest and descend to a lower altitude if necessary.
  • Local advice: Local guides are usually well-versed in altitude-related issues and can provide valuable advice and assistance. Listen to your team leader's advice.

A few things that you should know before traveling to Bhutan

  • Wi-Fi and communication: There will be no issue with WiFi in Paro and Thimphu. WiFi is free in hotels and restaurants. To use the internet while visiting monuments, you can purchase a local sim with data.
  • Charging devices: Bhutan uses Type D and Type F electrical outlets, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Make sure to bring the appropriate power adapters for your devices.
  • Hot showers: While most hotels offer hot showers, especially in tourist areas, be prepared for variations in water temperature and water pressure.
  • Luggage: Pack according to the season and activities you plan to undertake. Weather can be unpredictable, so layers are essential. Keep your luggage light and easy to manage.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not compulsory in Bhutan but is appreciated for good service. You can tip hotel staff, guides, and drivers based on your satisfaction. A 10% service charge is often included in restaurant bills.
  • Personal expenses: Credit cards are accepted in major cities and tourist areas, but it's a good idea to carry some Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) for small purchases. Be prepared for additional expenses like international fight tickets, tips, travel insurance, shopping, etc.
  • Travel visa: Bhutan requires travelers to obtain a visa through an authorized tour operator. Booking your trip through a licensed tour operator will help you arrange the visa smoothly.
  • Money exchange: Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is the official currency, but Indian Rupees (INR) are widely accepted. US dollars are also commonly used. Currency exchange facilities are available at the airport, banks, and some hotels. Keep in mind that high-denomination Indian Rupee notes (INR 500 and 1,000) are not accepted in Bhutan.
