What Makes The 13 Days Upper Mustang Trek Unique?

Kagbeni Monastery:

Kagbeni is one of the oldest monasteries and a cultural gem that reflects our Upper Mustang’s Tibetan Buddhist heritage. This place is nestled at an elevation of 2810m, where it features intricate murals and statues. These artifacts are the major identity of the history and traditions of the locals. The Surrounding village with its mud-brick houses and prayer wheels is decorated with enchanting traditional murals, which help our experience to enhance and enchant.

Upper Mustang’s Unique Landscape:

Upper Mustang is an arid, desert-like terrain that provides us with the spectacular experience of the terrain of Nepal beyond the Himalayas. While we ascend from Kagbeni and beyond, we will be rewarded by the breathtaking colourful rock formations and deep canyons, and barren hills that resemble a lunar vista. The stark beauty that is shaped by the natural calamities will captivate us with its stunning and striking view of shapes. This setting is distinct from the lush greenery and snow-capped mountains. Offers a surreal backdrop as we traverse remote paths.

Syanboche and Ghami Villages:

The cultural immersion of this trek reaches new heights when we visit the most prolific Villages of Syanboche and Ghami. We will get to immerse ourselves in a distinctively remote setting set against the stunning barren backdrop of Upper Mustang. The settlements showcase the traditional mud-brick homes and terraced fields that are framed by the towering peaks. We will observe the intricate tapestry of local existence, from pastoral herding to agrarian toil, while delving into the cultural sanctity of the region’s venerable gompas. These villages provide the best panoramic views and cultural immersion.

Charang’s Cultural Heritage:

Charang is home to an ancient monastery and a historic place significant for the palace. The monastery and the palace showcase the vibrant thangkas and prayer rooms that reflect Mustang’s Tibetan Buddhist roots. We will explore Charang’s narrow alleys, adorned with the chortens and mani walls that soak with the timeless charm. The cultural stop offers a deep dive into the region’s rich and proud history. This heritage will leave us enchanted by Mustang’s preserved traditions and architecture.

Lo-Manthang Exploration:

We will explore the site of Lo Manthang, which stands tall at an elevation of 3810m. This is also known as the walled capital of Upper Mustang. This ancient city is associated with its royal palace and four monasteries like Thubchen and Jampa, which makes this place a cultural treasure. We will stroll through the alleys, scrutinize the vibrant local customs, and marvel at the elaborate artistry of Buddhist iconography. The Tiji festival may feature the vibrant masked dances and colourful vibes. Lo Manthang, for its cultural and historical significance, is a major highlight for this trek.

Yara and Tange Villages:

We will get to discover the remote Mustang settlements of Yara and Tangge. These high-altitude settlements are isolated yet offer an authentic glimpse into the traditional lifestyles. These isolated villages will offer the serene experience of mud houses, barley fields, and the famous cave monastery of Yara’s Luri Gompa. The stark high-altitude remote villages and landscapes enhance the sense of adventure. We will get enough time to interact and soak up the great culture of the locals.

Spiritual Site of Muktinath:

We will reach Muktinath on our 11th day of the trek, which is a sacred destination for the followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. The temple with its eternal flame and 108 water spouts is a major highlight of this place. Muktinath provides a contemplative interlude, rendering the trek profoundly captivating and indelibly etched in the corridors of memory. Draped by the panoramic mountain views, this site blends natural beauty and religious importance to a reflective pause.

Best Time for the Upper Mustang Trek

Spring (March to May):

The season of spring, March to May is a vibrantly coloured season that blooms with the mild temperatures. We will get to enjoy the windy and clear skies for the breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. We will get to enjoy the local festivals like Tiji, which often falls in the month of May, if we travel to Upper Mustang this season. The arid landscape softens with sparse greenery and an enchanting scenic mosaic throughout the trek. Occasional rain in May might disrupt the experience, but that is a rare event.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn, September to November comes with the crisp air, stable weather conditions, and moderate temperatures. The days are equal, so we will get the best experience of the trek. The crystal clear visuals provide a unique experience, and unobstructed vistas are what we crave during such treks. The trails will be dry, ensuring a safe and secure passage from Chele to Ghami. The major festivals like Dashain and Tihar fall in this season, which add a unique vibrance to the trail. Autumn is a calm winds and comfortable guesthouse stays, making it ideal for exploring Mustang’s monasteries and cultural sites at their finest.

What sets the Upper Mustang Trek apart from many other trekking routes in Nepal is its location in the Trans-Himalayan zone, a rare rain-shadow area. Thanks to this distinctive geography, the region sees very little rainfall even during the monsoon months of June to August. While much of Nepal is drenched in heavy downpours at that time, Upper Mustang stays largely dry, with only the occasional light rain.

That said, spring and autumn remain the most popular trekking seasons, offering mild temperatures and reliable weather. In contrast, winter from December through February is generally not recommended. The intense cold in higher elevations can be challenging, and many tea houses and local services shut down during these months.

Difficulty during Upper Mustang Trek

We will have a moderate amount of trekking days that last for about 4-6 hours, and the highest altitudes of 3930m. The trek demands good physical conditions and acclimatization for a safe and secure traverse. We will navigate diverse landscapes in a rugged terrain and passage, which is an adventurous voyage, yet with a lot of rewards. Beware of the weather as it can be very unpredictable and windy, especially at the higher elevations.

Altitude Sickness and Remedies

This moderate trek requires careful acclimatization to prevent symptoms like headaches or nausea. We outline the risks and remedies to ensure a safe journey through Mustang’s high-altitude terrain.

The Upper Mustang Trek reaches the highest altitude of 3930m and poses the risks of altitude sickness due to lower oxygen levels. This moderate trek requires careful acclimatization to prevent symptoms like nausea and headaches at the preliminary level. The focal point for the risks to be seen generally is after the crossing of Kagbeni when we ascend over the 3000m mark.

To reduce the potential risks of mountain sickness, aka altitude sickness, we will gradually ascend and take enough rest before ascending towards steep elevations. Drinking more than 4 liters of water each day is recommended. If you think it is hard for you to ascend, take a rest or descend with the help of a companion or a guide.

As we go higher, the options and amenities decrease.

Accommodations During the Upper Mustang Trek

The teahouses have the basic facilities available. The rooms typically are twin-sharing with shared bathrooms. We will reside in modest teahouses during the Upper Mustang trek, embracing their rustic simplicity. Accommodation facilities will be comfortable in Jomsom with private rooms and attached bathrooms available. Essential amenities such as hot showers and Wi-Fi remain unavailable in remote hamlets like Lo Manthang and Chele. We recommend that you have a sleeping bag carried with you for more comfortable sleep during the colder nights.

Communication Services

The communication facilities during the Upper Mustang Trek are limited due to the remote terrain of the region. We rely on basic options in villages like Jomsom and Kagbeni, where we might get internet facilities and network services. Nepal Telecom delivers the most reliable mobile network coverage across this region. We will rely on the landline phones of the teahouses for communication.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is always crucial for the high-altitude terrain of the Upper Mustang Trek. Travel insurance helps us to cover the expenses in case of an emergency, like emergency medical bills and emergency evacuation. Make sure you have the policy that covers emergencies during the stint of high-altitude terrains like this. The medical expenses for such emergencies are too heavy for you to cover by yourself.  In order to save those big bucks, travel insurance is very important. We highly recommend that you have travel insurance from your home country, as the local options are not always reliable and might not cover all the necessary tickmarks. Verify the coverage details before booking to safeguard against such challenges.
