Why Is It Called Australian Camp? History & Local Insights

Australian Camp, located above Pokhara in the Annapurna Region, originally known as “Thulo Kharka,”means a large grazing field. Until the 1980s, Thulo Kharka was a quiet and relatively unknown grazing land, with very few visitors. It was only a short walk from the main trekking route, yet it remained off the beaten path at the time. According to local stories, during the late 1980s, a group of Austrian travelers visited the area and were greatly awed by its magnificent Himalayan views, peaceful surroundings, and natural beauty. They frequently camped there, captivated by the landscape.

Locals began referring to the spot as “Austrian Camp” in reference to these visitors. Over time, due to pronunciation difficulty and local adaptation, “Austrian” gradually evolved into “Australian,” which is how the name Australian Camp came into popular use.

Today, the name remains a reminder of early trekking history in the region, while the viewpoint continues to attract visitors with its stunning scenery and cultural surroundings.
